Walter Lauffer Collection 1850-1970

The collection contains photographs depicting a wide variety of subjects, including formal portraits of individuals and groups; urban and rural scenes; structures; animals and plants and people engaged in outdoor recreation. Additionally, there are photographs of the funeral procession of Warren G. Harding in Marion, Ohio and photographs of World War I era soldiers, possibly members of the Ohio National Guard. The bulk of the photographs are unidentified. Albums include photographs of Governor Lausche and others inspecting a coal mine; souvenir postcard albums and photographs of the dedication of the Morrow County Victory Shaft . Slides found in the collection also depict structures, plants, animals and outdoor scenes. Additionally, there are slides of Ohio State University football game in October 1960. Safety and nitrate film negatives illustrate people, buildings, construction and industry, animals and plants and sports. There are also nitrate film negatives of Lima College. Glass plate negatives depict members of the Lauffer Family, including Walter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Lauffer, wife, Millie, and children, Carl, Dorthea and Anna. There are also glass plates of unidentified people, Lima College and the Morrow County Victory Shaft. In addition to photographic materials the collection includes material in a variety of audiovisual formats. There is one audio recording of WTVN broadcast. Ephemera in the collection includes personal memorabilia of Walter M. Lauffer related to his career and civic activities. 44 reels of 16mm moving image film are found in the collection. The bulk of the films are about nature conservation, game management and wildlife. Many of the films were produced by the Ohio Division of Natural Resources and Conservation and some credit Walter Lauffer as the photographer. There are also Lauffer family home movies documenting family vacations to Glacier National Park, Montana and Florida; footage of outdoor recreation, a Boy Scout meeting training the boys to use firearms and the Ohio State Fair.

Walter Lauffer was a photographer, filmmaker and outdoorsmen. He was born in Pennsylvania in approximately 1887. He is listed in both the 1920 and 1930 census as living with his wife Millie and three children, Carl, Dorthea "Dolly" and Anna, in Mt. Gilead, Ohio. In the 1930 census photographer was recorded as his profession. For a period of time he ran his own photography studio, the Lauffer Studio, located in Cardington and Mt. Gilead.
